Local Union 228 steamfitters/pipefitters layout, fabricate, assemble, install, maintain, and repair piping
systems that transport all types of fluids, slurries and gas in the residential, commercial, and industrial
sectors. They are the only trade to specialize in planning, design, and installation of low and high
pressure steam systems. They work in such diverse fields as oil refineries, paper mills, nuclear power
plants, and manufacturing plants. They install medical gas lines in hospitals, and high-purity process
piping for semiconductor, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical manufacturing

Their work includes installation, maintenance, and repair of all types of piping systems, as well as join
structural steel brackets and supports for such systems.

Whether it is an oil refinery, power generating plant, oil pipeline, or medical gas lines in a hospital, the
highly skilled welders and pipefitters of Local Union 228 are committed to excellence. Once Local Union 228
pipefitters and welders complete their five-year apprenticeship, they become journeymen in their
respective fields. However, their education continues; they train and pursue necessary certifications for
